Garang Hakim Aluong, 37, was shot outside Giliberto’s Restaurant in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in the early morning of November 7, 2021, after a late-night gathering in the parking lot erupted into violence. Police described more than 40 people in the 700 block of South Minnesota Avenue around 2:40 a.m., when two groups who apparently knew each other moved from arguing to physical fighting and then to gunfire after a handgun appeared. Aluong was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital and died of his injuries; two other men, 26 and 29, were wounded and vehicles in the lot were struck.
Investigators initially relied on witness statements and crowd-shot video and said they had no clear person of interest. One man, Isaac Mohammod Wali, was arrested at the scene on allegations including aggravated assault on law enforcement and eluding after officers said he nearly struck an officer while leaving; police said he had no weapon on him then and was not immediately linked to the shooting. A public announcement later reported convictions after plea bargains tied to this shooting and named charges and sentences for Wali and Antoine Demetrius Richardson Jr.
Aluong was remembered by family as a longtime Sioux Falls resident who worked at places including Smithfield and Peska Construction and left behind a teenage daughter, siblings, nieces and nephews. If anyone was at the parking lot that morning or has information about what led to the shooting, please share what is known.
