A welfare check at an apartment in the Donegal Pointe complex on South Rolling Green Avenue in Sioux Falls on April 27, 2020, turned up a grim discovery. Residents had reported a persistent, unpleasant odor coming from a unit; officers found the body of 63-year-old Teresa Ann Cate inside. Investigators concluded her death was not natural and determined she died of a gunshot wound. The condition of the body suggested she had been dead for up to ten days before being found.

Police soon focused on a person close to the victim. Teresa’s son, 36-year-old Anthony Lee-Nicholas Pritchard, who had been living with her, was taken into custody the day after the discovery and charged with first-degree murder. He was already facing an unrelated misdemeanor in a neighboring county at the time; bond was set at $500,000. Teresa Cate was a retired registered nurse, born in Spencer, Iowa, who trained in Omaha and worked in several hospitals and is remembered as trustworthy and kind.

If anyone knew Teresa, her routines, or saw anything unusual at the Donegal Pointe Apartments that April, please share what might help the investigation.
