Darius Jae Tiger was a 21-year-old Native American man whose life ended in Sioux Falls on September 3, 2018. Friends and family remembered him for his easy humor, loud laugh, and a smile that made people feel like they belonged; basketball, music, and late-night gaming were part of his life and he showed up fiercely for his siblings. That night he was with friends when one of them began showing off a recently acquired shotgun and the firearm discharged, striking Tiger in the back.
The shooter, Stasek Alexandr Stefanyuk, was arrested and charged with first-degree manslaughter; investigators also tied the incident to methamphetamine possession. Defense motions later sought suppression of blood and urine evidence as having been collected without a warrant or consent. Stefanyuk pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and drug possession; in August 2019 a judge imposed a 12½-year prison sentence that was entirely suspended. A funeral service for Tiger was held on September 8, 2018, in Flandreau.
If anyone knew Darius or was present that night and can share information, please come forward.
