Brett Alan Thooft, 36, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was killed on May 1, 2017, after an altercation at an apartment in an industrial area of the city. Investigators said Thooft had been at the apartment of Ronald Douglas Cook, 45, and that a fight on the evening of April 30 escalated. Authorities reported Cook produced a .40-caliber handgun and fired two shots into Thooft—one to the head and one to the chest—killing him in the apartment.
Officers were alerted the next morning when a friend went to give Cook a ride and found a note saying something bad had happened and asking that police be called. Investigators described finding Cook dead as well and said they believed he used the same handgun to take his own life on May 1. Police noted alcohol was likely a factor and reported finding a small amount of marijuana in the apartment. Because the suspected shooter was deceased, no arrests or charges were pursued in Thooft’s killing.
Thooft had an earlier unrelated arrest in Sioux Falls in which police said a car was set on fire; a local report named charges of second-degree arson and reckless burning. Does anyone have memories of Thooft or the people connected to this case who could help fill in what happened that weekend?
