Anthony Lee Gabriel, 18, was shot during a car chase in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on the evening of Thursday, January 29, 2015. Gabriel was driving with a 20-year-old woman and her five-month-old infant when his vehicle was pursued and struck by gunfire near the Empire Mall on Louise Avenue. A bullet hit Gabriel in the head, and the woman brought the car to a stop and called for help.

Gabriel was taken to Sanford Medical Center on life support and died there on Sunday, February 1, 2015; his death was ruled a homicide. Police arrested 19-year-old Robert Edward Montes and 17-year-old Connor Bryon Hanson the day after the shooting in Marshall, Minnesota. Investigators said longstanding tensions over relationships were a factor, and reported that the infant in Gabriel’s car was the child of his girlfriend and one of the suspects. Both suspects were brought back to Minnehaha County to face charges after Gabriel’s death.
