Keshaudas Spence, 29, was shot in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday, June 26, 2021, and later died at Rhode Island Hospital. Pawtucket police found him in the passenger seat of a black Acura on Winthrop Avenue with a gunshot wound to the head; his death was ruled a homicide.
A native of Brockton who grew up in Roxbury, Spence was a celebrated football player. He starred at Catholic Memorial High School, attended the Taft School, and became Sacred Heart University’s all-time leading rusher with 3,745 yards. After graduating in 2015 with a communications degree, he played in the Indoor Football League for the Green Bay Blizzard and the Iowa Barnstormers.
Investigators combined witness interviews and surveillance footage to trace a group’s movements that night. Footage from the apartment complex showed a man later identified as Karel Martinez-Scarlet firing toward the Acura before fleeing in another car. Martinez-Scarlet was arrested on August 6, 2021, and admitted firing a weapon at the scene; a grand jury later indicted him on charges that included murder and conspiracy.
If anyone knew Keshaudas, saw the group’s movements that night, or has information about the shooting, please come forward.
