Amanda Sanderson, 35, was one of two people killed in a deadly fire and shooting at a log cabin on Shirley Circle in Townshend, Vermont. On the morning of Friday, October 27, 2017, firefighters responding to reports of explosions found the home fully engulfed; after the blaze was extinguished, the bodies of Sanderson and her 43-year-old housemate, Steven Lovely, were recovered. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined both victims had been shot before the fire, and the manner of death for each was ruled a homicide.

Investigators identified Justin Orwat, 46, and his wife, Tami Orwat, as associates who had been staying at the cabin for about two weeks. Tami told detectives she and her husband were present the night of October 26 into the early morning of October 27, that a dispute broke out between Justin and Steven Lovely, that she heard gunshots, and that she fled the cabin with her husband after he said he started the fire with a cigarette and lighter. An arrest warrant was issued for Justin Orwat on aggravated murder and first-degree arson; at that time he was in custody in Massachusetts on unrelated charges and was later extradited to Vermont.
