On February 18, 1985, seven-year-old Dawn Marie Bishop was one of three family members found dead in their Rutland, Vermont, apartment on the corner of Crescent and Grove streets. Dawn, her five-year-old brother Matthew Alan Bishop, and their mother June Marie Oles Bishop, 31, were discovered fatally shot as they slept.
Authorities identified the victims’ 32-year-old father and estranged husband, Donald Alan Bishop, as the person who entered the home in the early morning, killed June and the two children, and then died by suicide. Investigators reported no signs of a struggle and recovered a handwritten note in Donald Bishop’s car in which he said he could not cope with the separation and wrote that if he couldn’t have his children, no one would.
The Rutland County State’s Attorney classified the incident as a triple homicide and a suicide. Does anyone have memories or information about the family, the neighborhood, or events leading up to that February morning?
