On the late evening of June 28, 2022, 22-year-old Isaac John Landry died after being shot once in the chest in a Rite-Aid parking lot on Elm Street in Manchester, New Hampshire. The Chief Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death a gunshot wound to the chest and the manner of death homicide, a medical-legal term indicating one person was killed by another.
According to the Attorney General’s Office and Manchester Police Department investigation, Landry allegedly approached and confronted 34-year-old Jonathan Bright and a companion while brandishing a large tree branch and yelling. Bright, who was legally carrying a handgun, reportedly retreated and warned Landry to stop; when Landry continued to charge, Bright fired once, striking Landry. Bright called 911 immediately, surrendered to police at the scene, and the wounded Landry was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The subsequent inquiry reviewed witness statements, physical evidence, and video surveillance. The Attorney General’s July 2023 report concluded Bright believed his life was in danger and that his use of deadly force was justified; no criminal charges were filed. Landry’s parents said he had a history of mental health challenges and past hospitalizations but no formal diagnosis. Did anyone witness the confrontation in the Rite-Aid parking lot or have additional information about what led up to it?
