On November 24, 2013, in Manchester, New Hampshire, 20-year-old Charles William Cable approached the Hoffens brothers’ Lake Avenue apartment to settle a longstanding dispute. Cable brought an unloaded gun, reportedly to intimidate and arrange a fistfight. A confrontation with 20-year-old David Hoffens escalated when Cable allegedly grabbed David by the neck and ran the unloaded gun along his face.

David drew his own firearm; a struggle followed and multiple shots were fired. Cable was fatally wounded. Edgar Hoffens, who had left the apartment armed but did not fire, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest from David’s gun during the struggle. David fled and discarded his firearm near a trash barrel west of Hall Street; police recovered his holster and sweatshirt but not the gun, and he was charged with falsifying evidence for attempting to remove the weapon.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office later concluded David was justified in using deadly force against Cable because it was reasonable to fear Cable was preparing to use deadly force. Officials found insufficient evidence to determine who fired the shot that killed Edgar, and no criminal charges were filed in connection with Edgar’s death.

Did anyone in the neighborhood see the struggle or the discarded firearm that night?
