A routine traffic stop in Colebrook, New Hampshire, on August 19, 1997, turned deadly when Trooper Scott Edward Phillips, 32, was shot by the vehicle’s driver, Carl Drega. According to reports, Drega exited his car wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with an automatic rifle, opened fire, and wounded Phillips. Phillips returned fire until his service weapon was empty. When Trooper Leslie Lord arrived to assist, Drega fatally shot him before approaching the wounded Phillips and shooting him four more times at close range.
Afterward, Drega stole Phillips’ patrol car and continued a rampage through the town, killing part-time judge Vickie Bunnell and newspaper editor Dennis Joos and wounding several other officers. The spree ended when Drega was killed in a shootout with law enforcement in Vermont. The case is considered solved with the primary suspect deceased. Does anyone have additional information about Trooper Phillips or memories of Colebrook on August 19, 1997?
