A dispute over living arrangements in Nampa turned deadly on September 16, 2021. James Daniel Chantz, a 21-year-old Black man, was shot in his apartment on the 300 block of West Orchard Avenue and died of his injuries the next day. Officers found him with gunshot wounds to the head, forearm, and thigh and he was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
Chantz had asked his 21-year-old roommate, Christopher J. Williams, to move out a day earlier than planned after tensions grew when Williams lost a job Chantz had helped him obtain. Chantz told the mother of his child that a Glock handgun was missing and he suspected Williams had taken it. Williams later told police the two struggled over a gun and that he shot Chantz after gaining control of the weapon. A neighbor heard the shots and saw a man leave in Chantz’s pickup truck.
Williams fled the state in the stolen truck, used Chantz’s debit card for purchases across several towns, and was arrested after erratic driving and a pursuit near Tremonton, Utah. He was returned to Idaho, pleaded guilty in May 2022 to voluntary manslaughter, two counts of grand theft, and destruction of evidence, and was sentenced to up to 48 years with parole eligibility after 18 years; he was ordered to pay $5,000 to Chantz’s family.
Did anyone in Nampa know Chantz or have information about his last hours at the West Orchard Avenue apartment?
