Robert Bobby Eugene Skinner, 22, was killed by a gunshot in the early hours of August 23, 2019, in a house near Boise State University. He was visiting a friend’s residence and had been out drinking earlier that night with the friend, roommates, and others. The shooting occurred about 2:45 a.m.; Skinner was initially reported by Boise police to have died from an unintentional, self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Further investigation by the Boise Police Violent Crimes Unit and the Crime Lab changed that initial assessment. Detectives concluded the fatal shot was not self-inflicted and that the circumstances suggested possible criminal charges. After nearly a yearlong probe, the Ada County prosecutor sought an arrest warrant for Kyle Kelly, then 21, and in July 2020 Kelly was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter. Court filings state Kelly accidentally shot Skinner in the neck that night at Kelly’s home.

What details about that night, or about either man’s movements that evening, might help clarify how this tragedy unfolded?
