Kelbie Ray Nelson was 13 when he died on December 26, 2014, while visiting family at his grandmother’s home in Blackfoot, Idaho. The seventh-grader, who lived in Flagstaff, Arizona, reportedly found a firearm in the house and began handling it; the weapon discharged and he sustained a fatal wound. Emergency responders took him to Bingham Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Blackfoot Police Department’s investigation determined the shooting was unintentional. The firearm belonged to a resident of the home, and no arrests or suspect searches were conducted. Family and friends remembered Kelbie for his love of baseball, fishing, and time spent with his grandfathers.
If anyone was in Blackfoot or at that home on December 26, 2014, and has information about what happened, please share what is known.
