On the evening of May 19, 2007, 62-year-old Paul Bauer was shot and killed while working as the caretaker at the First Presbyterian Church in Moscow, Idaho. Bauer was in his office and, according to accounts, was on the phone with 911 dispatchers when he was struck multiple times and mortally wounded.
The shooter was identified as Jason Hamilton, who had already killed his wife, Crystal Hamilton, and Moscow Police Sergeant Lee Newbill earlier that day before arriving at the church. Hamilton’s rampage ended inside the church sanctuary when he died by suicide; with the shooter deceased, Bauer’s killing is part of that single violent incident and there were no arrests connected to his death.
Bauer is remembered as a kind, helpful member of the community whose life was cut short. Does anyone have memories of Bauer or information about that night that could add to the record?
