On April 18, 2023, Patricia Patti DeRaps Egar, 62, was found dead in her Bowdoin, Maine, home along with her husband, Robert Eger, 72, and their friends Cynthia Eaton, 62, and David Eaton, 66. All four victims died from gunshot wounds; the scene was discovered by Patricia’s sister after she could not reach her.

Authorities say the suspect was 34-year-old Joseph Eaton, the son of Cynthia and David Eaton. Eaton had been released from a correctional facility on April 14, 2023, and his mother brought him to the Egers’ home, where his parents were staying with the couple. A note at the scene expressed a desire for a new life and freedom from pain. Days later Eaton reportedly opened fire on vehicles along Interstate 295 in Yarmouth, wounding three people, and was taken into custody; he subsequently confessed to the four Bowdoin killings and the highway shootings.
