A parking-lot dispute at the Auburn Walmart on the evening of July 27, 2019, ended with the death of 41-year-old Jean Fournier of Turner. Witnesses described a heated argument between two men that turned into a physical fight after comments were exchanged involving the woman Fournier was with. Some accounts say Fournier was walking away when he was shot twice in the back.
Emergency responders and Good Samaritans tried to save Fournier, who died at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. An autopsy ruled the cause of death gunshot wounds and classified the death as a homicide. Authorities identified 21-year-old Gage Dalphonse of Auburn as the suspect; he remained at the scene and claimed self-defense. He was taken into custody and charged with murder. A jury later acquitted Gage Dalphonse of murder and manslaughter.
Anyone who witnessed the confrontation that night or who knew Fournier and his routines is urged to come forward with information.
