Richard J. Diekema, 55, was found dead in his mobile home on Songo School Road in Naples, Maine, on November 27, 2016, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound. He had recently allowed a man named Norman Strobel to move in. Strobel was already a suspect in a shooting in nearby Casco the previous night that wounded another man and was being sought by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
In the early hours of November 27 deputies tracked Strobel to Diekema’s residence. When they entered the mobile home they encountered an armed Strobel; an exchange of gunfire followed and Strobel was shot and killed by officers. The investigation concluded Strobel was responsible for Diekema’s death and no other suspects have been identified.
Diekema is remembered by family as a skilled mechanic and a devoted, helpful man. If anyone knew Richard, where he worked, or saw activity at the Songo School Road home around November 26–27, investigators would like to hear from you?
