Noah Nathaniel Smith was 7 years old when he was killed at his family’s apartment in Saco, Maine, on the night of July 26, 2014. He was one of four family members who died in the same home that night; his mother Heather Smith, his 12-year-old stepbrother Jason Montez, and his 4-year-old sister Lily Smith were also killed.
Investigators determined the deaths were caused by a 12-gauge shotgun and concluded Noah’s father, 33-year-old Joel Smith, was the sole perpetrator. Joel Smith also died at the scene; the incident was described as a murder-suicide. Reports noted he had a history of anxiety and depression, had stopped taking prescribed medication after losing health insurance, and the family was experiencing financial problems. Neighbors said there had been no prior reports of domestic violence, though Heather Smith reportedly told a friend that evening Joel had recently threatened suicide.
If anyone knew the Smith family or has information about the events leading up to July 26, 2014, please come forward.
