Matthew S. Rairdon, 22, was killed in a domestic violence murder-suicide in Westbrook, Maine, on November 30, 2013. A recent nursing graduate from St. Joseph’s College and an emergency room nurse at Mercy Hospital, Rairdon was ambushed returning from his shift when his ex-boyfriend, 30-year-old Patrick Milliner, shot him in the head and chest just after midnight as Rairdon opened the apartment door.

Milliner then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head; a .40-caliber Glock was found near his body and had been purchased hours earlier. Milliner, a new correctional guard at the Maine Correctional Facility in Windham, left a lengthy Facebook post and a written note in the apartment expressing distress over the breakup, evidence officials described as indicating premeditation. Rairdon’s death was recorded as the state’s 23rd homicide that year and the 10th tied to domestic violence.
