Richard L. Mills Jr., 48, was found dead at his home in Cushing, Maine, on September 27, 2012. A man described by family as devoted to hunting, fishing and the house he built, Mills was killed by gunfire; an autopsy confirmed multiple gunshot wounds.
Police arrested Andrew J. Kierstead, 41, of Tenants Harbor and charged him with Mills’s murder. Kierstead told investigators that Mills had supplied him with illegal pills on credit and that a dispute over a drug debt led him to go to Mills’s home and shoot him multiple times with a 12-gauge shotgun. Kierstead’s defense sought suppression of his confession on the grounds he was intoxicated, but the court rejected that motion.
What details do readers recall about Richard Mills or the Cushing area around that time that might shed light on this case?
