Marie Bondurant Swecker Flewellen was 75 when she died at her Skowhegan, Maine, home on May 24, 2011. Police were called at 10:41 a.m. by her 86-year-old husband, Barbour Flewellen, who said there had been two mercy killings. Officers forced entry and found both Marie and Barbour in their second-floor bedroom.
Maine State Police investigators concluded the incident was a murder-suicide: Barbour shot Marie and then turned the gun on himself. A .22-caliber revolver was recovered; no suicide note was reported. Neighbors described the couple as pleasant but frail, said they had been ill over the winter, and noted Marie, an artist who painted nature scenes overlooking the Kennebec River, had left a thank-you card for a neighbor the night before.
The investigation did not identify any other persons involved and was closed with Barbour as the sole suspect. If anyone knew the Flewellens or saw them around Alder Street in late May 2011, what information can be shared?
