Debra J. Durborow Meitzler, 51, was found dead in her Prentiss, Maine, home on May 25, 2010. Investigators determined she had been fatally shot by her husband, Dean A. Meitzler, who then died by suicide; autopsies confirmed both died of gunshot wounds. Their 29-year-old son, Jasen Meitzler, discovered the bodies after hearing the gunshots and notified authorities.

The couple had moved to the Averill Road residence about a year earlier from Barto, Pennsylvania. Debra worked as a licensed practical nurse at Colonial Health Care in Lincoln and had previously worked at Pennsburg Manor; she graduated with honors from the Brandywine School of Nursing. Friends and family described the couple as appearing happy and financially stable. No motive or suicide note was reported, and the death was recorded as the seventh homicide in Maine in 2010 and the fifth related to domestic violence.
