Mary E. Sandberg, 78, was found dead in her Monson, Maine, home on Steward Road on Sunday, November 27, 2005. A neighbor who had come to help Mary and her 80-year-old husband, John, pack for a move to an assisted-living facility made the discovery.

Investigators concluded the deaths likely occurred between Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Authorities believe John Sandberg fatally shot Mary with a rifle and then turned the weapon on himself in an apparent murder-suicide. John was a lifelong Monson resident and worked as a self-employed farmer and woodsman; Mary attended Holy Family Catholic Church in Sangerville.

The double fatality was one of nineteen homicides recorded in Maine that year, and more than half of those were domestic in nature. Are there neighbors, friends, or family who remember the Sandbergs and can share details about their final weeks?
