On August 21, 2004, at about 8 a.m. in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, 71-year-old Sarah Murray was shot to death at her summer home. The shooting also killed her daughter-in-law, 41-year-old Chevelle Chellie Calloway, inside the residence. Sarah’s son, 51-year-old Jon Dilley, arrived at the house and an argument followed; Dilley was arrested at the scene without incident and a semiautomatic handgun was found in his vehicle.
Two young children, ages 6 and 9, who were the son and daughter of Dilley and Calloway, witnessed the shootings and ran to a neighboring Coast Guard station for help; neighbors then contacted the Boothbay Harbor police. Dilley was charged with two counts of murder; at trial the defense argued he was in a depersonalized state, and in May 2006 a jury convicted him on two counts of manslaughter and he received a 60-year sentence.
Anyone who knew Sarah Murray or the family, or who remembers that morning in Boothbay Harbor, is asked to share information or memories that might help understand what happened.
