Soheyla Nosrati was 40 when she died in Portland, Maine, on April 10, 1998. She and her husband had immigrated from Iran in 1988, settled in Portland, opened small businesses and tried to bring relatives for visits, painting a picture of a couple who had built a life and routines in the city.

Police determined on the night of April 10 that Soheyla had been shot and killed by her husband, Karim Nosrati, who then fatally shot himself. State authorities classified the incident as a domestic-violence murder-suicide; because the identified perpetrator died at the scene, there were no arrests or prosecution. Burial records list her interment at Portland’s Evergreen Cemetery.
