John Malmstrom was a 45-year-old pediatric neurologist in Bangor, Maine, who was shot to death inside his home on January 24, 1997. The case became high-profile locally and triggered a lengthy investigation after the prominent doctor’s violent death.

In 1999 his wife, Geraldine Malmstrom, was indicted; prosecutors said she had means and opportunity and that the murder weapon, a gun from her family, was recovered four months after the shooting in bushes near a funeral home. Her trial in 2000 was sensational: the defense questioned the police investigation and raised other possible suspects, and three handguns were found in the Malmstroms’ teenage daughter’s bedroom during the case. Geraldine was ultimately acquitted.

With that acquittal the killing remains unsolved. Some have speculated about a possible link to Dr. Malmstrom’s cooperation in an investigation of other medical professionals and prescription narcotics, but no one else has been charged. If anyone knew Dr. Malmstrom, his movements that evening, or has information about the weapon’s discovery, please share what is known.
