On the night of July 14, 2021, a burst of gunfire tore through the Knollwood community in Claymont, Delaware. At about 9:40 p.m. New Castle County police responded to Balfour Avenue and found multiple people wounded. Sixteen-year-old Jasir Brown and 27-year-old Nathan T. Smith were among those shot; both were taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. Two other victims — a 19-year-old woman treated for a gunshot wound to the arm and an 18-year-old man later hospitalized in serious condition — survived the incident.
Prosecutors later characterized the episode as a botched robbery that turned into an exchange of gunfire. Israel Lecompte was identified in subsequent court filings as a central defendant tied to the Claymont shootout; he pleaded guilty to charges including second-degree murder, assault, attempted robbery, and weapons offenses in the broader case.
Does anyone have information about what happened on Balfour Avenue that night or knew Jasir Brown?
