James Franklin BJ Dickerson Jr., 35, was killed during a violent home invasion south of Bridgeville, Delaware, in the early hours of January 7, 2016. Dickerson was a guest at a residence on Conrail Bridge Road when several armed intruders entered. Police arrived after a 12:40 a.m. 911 call and found him in the kitchen with multiple gunshot wounds, including a wound to the head; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bridgeville and Seaford officers joined Delaware State Police in searching the area but did not locate the attackers, a suspicious vehicle, or any publicly identified suspect. Detectives described the perpetrators only as several armed individuals and asked neighbors and the public for information about who entered the house, supplied transportation, or helped afterward.

About 21 hours later, someone fired at least one shot from outside toward the same house, striking a front bedroom window; no one was injured and police treated it as a drive-by shooting. Dickerson, known as BJ, was identified in his obituary as the son of James F. Dickerson Sr. and the late JoAnn Dredden; funeral services were held January 20, 2016, with burial in Dover. No arrest or named suspect has been announced; anyone with information is urged to come forward.
