Jack Eller Creed, 22, of Peoria, Arizona, died after being struck by a single gunshot to the abdomen during a camping trip at United Christian Youth Camp near Prescott on July 26, 2024. He and a friend had gone to a secluded area to shoot firearms and hunt skunks. Back at the campsite after sunset, one of the men attempted to clear a .22 caliber firearm, pulled the charging handle back multiple times, then pointed the gun across from him and pulled the trigger; the round struck Creed.

Creed was taken to a Prescott hospital in initially stable condition but suffered complications during transport to a Phoenix-area hospital and died after surgery on July 27, 2024. The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office described the incident as a tragic accident and is investigating. The shooter has not been publicly identified and no charges have been filed as of the latest reports; Creed had been due to serve as best man at a coming wedding.
