On the morning of February 6, 2022, 59-year-old Scott Harkness was found on the side of the road near Camelback and Hayden roads in Scottsdale, Arizona, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound. First responders transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The community remembered Harkness as a regular at Zipps Sports Grill, where he spent Saturday nights, and as a devoted Special Olympics athlete and volunteer coach for the Scottsdale Bobcats.The investigation identified 38-year-old John Merryman after forensic testing linked a gun recovered near the scene to both Harkness’s wound and to Merryman.

Merryman was charged with first-degree murder, a drive-by shooting, and possession of a weapon by a prohibited person and pleaded not guilty to all charges. The shooting was described as a seemingly random act of violence that shook the community.
