A visiting father and son from Korea disappeared while hiking a hazardous coastal trail in Oahu. On June 23, 2026, 16-year-old Ian Jo and his 49-year-old father, Sung Kwun Jo, left their Waikiki hotel about 7 a.m. to hike the Hanauma Bay Rock Bridge Trail. Hikers found a backpack near the Rock Bridge around 8:45 a.m. that contained the father’s phone and wallet, and their car was later located at the trailhead.
A multi-agency search covered more than 100 coastal miles from Makapuu Point to Barbers Point using helicopters, drones, boats, jet skis, divers and data buoys to model currents. Weather hampered efforts: choppy seas, a small craft advisory and strong winds made conditions dangerous. After three days of intensive searching with no sign of either man, officials suspended the active search at sunset on June 26, 2026.
The Rock Bridge area is described as a hazardous coastal attraction with steep cliffs and powerful surf; authorities believe the pair may have been swept into the ocean while near the landmark. If anyone was in the Rock Bridge area that morning or has information about their movements, please come forward.
