Matthew Dylan Gilmore was 28 when he was fatally shot late on Thursday, July 11, 2019, after an altercation outside Bruno’s Bar and Grill in Fountain Hills, Arizona. According to witnesses, a dispute began inside the bar after Gilmore believed another man, Christopher Charles Ruether, was making inappropriate advances toward his girlfriend. The confrontation turned physical and moved into the parking lot.
Witnesses said Ruether retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and fired at least one warning shot before driving his vehicle closer to the crowd. The exchange continued through a car window, and Gilmore was shot in the chest. Bystanders performed CPR but Gilmore was pronounced dead at the scene. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office arrested 25-year-old Christopher Charles Ruether on suspicion of manslaughter and discharging a weapon within city limits; the investigation was ongoing.
Gilmore was described as a loving father and fiancé who enjoyed outdoor activities such as camping and hiking. If anyone witnessed the events that night or has information about the shooting, please come forward.
