Trooper Tyler James Edenhofer, 24, was killed on the night of July 25, 2018, during a response on Interstate 10 near Avondale, Arizona. Edenhofer, a U.S. Navy veteran who had graduated from the police academy a few months earlier and was on his last night of field training, was part of a team responding to reports of a man throwing objects at vehicles. The officers located 20-year-old Isaac King and a struggle ensued while attempting to take him into custody.
During the altercation King gained control of a trooper’s firearm and fired two shots. One struck and fatally wounded Trooper Edenhofer; another trooper was wounded but survived. King was taken into custody at the scene and initially charged with first-degree murder. Reports say King had a history of mental illness and was reportedly under the influence and experiencing a psychotic break when he was on the highway throwing rocks to try to get police attention.
Who in the community remembers Trooper Edenhofer or has information about the encounter that night?
