Darrin Lee Reed, 50, was killed in the line of duty after responding to a suspicious-person call in Show Low, Arizona, on November 8, 2016. Reed, a U.S. Air Force veteran who had served about ten years with the Show Low Police Department and a previous decade with the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office, and other officers initially checked the area without finding the person. A second call prompted their return; the man was located, ran on foot, then produced a handgun and shot Officer Reed. Reed was taken to a nearby hospital and died of his wounds.
The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Daniel Erickson, fled and was later found barricaded in a cabin in the Pinetop-Lakeside area with a teenage girl held as a hostage. After several hours of negotiations Erickson fired on surrounding officers; they returned fire and Erickson was killed. The teen was rescued and treated for minor glass-related injuries. Erickson had a prior criminal history that included prison time for endangerment and a marijuana-related offense.
Did anyone in the Show Low or Pinetop-Lakeside area have information about the events leading up to that November 8 call or interactions with either man?
