On January 25, 1981, eight-year-old Deanne Leigh Bousquet was playing with two other children on the ice of the Saskatchewan River near Rahls Island, Manitoba, when the ice gave way. Warm water being discharged from a nearby mill had weakened the ice. Deanne and another child plunged into the river; the other child managed to pull themselves out, but Deanne was last seen struggling and going under the surface.
She was described as having brown hair and blue eyes and was wearing a black balaclava, a white and blue ski jacket, white ski pants, and brown rubber boots. Police carried out immediate and later searches of the river, but her body was never recovered and she is presumed to have perished.
The case remains listed as a missing person and continues to be a painful loss for her family and community. Does anyone have memories of that stretch of river or information from 1981 that could help fill in what happened that day?
