Janine Appleford was 42 when she was found fatally shot inside a home on Mud Springs Road in Black Canyon City, Arizona, on January 12, 2016. Deputies from the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office were called after a neighbor was alerted the next morning; when deputies arrived in the early afternoon they found Janine, who had been dead for several hours.

The victim’s boyfriend, 47-year-old Wayde Chaulklin, told investigators the shooting was an accident, saying a rifle struck a table and discharged. He said he covered Janine with a blanket and did not call for medical help. Detectives reported inconsistencies in his account, and Chaulklin was found to be in possession of methamphetamine at the time of his arrest. He was booked on a charge of second-degree murder.
