On the morning of May 24, 2014, 37-year-old Salt River Police Department officer Jair Abelardo Cabrera was shot and killed during a traffic stop near Pima and Chaparral roads on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, bordering Scottsdale, Arizona. The stop occurred about 3:05 a.m.; before Cabrera could exit his patrol car, a man stepped out of the stopped vehicle, rested an AR-15 on the car’s roof and fired. Cabrera was hit in the head and later pronounced dead at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center.
Three suspects ran from the scene and were later apprehended. The FBI led the investigation because the shooting happened on reservation land. Court evidence and gas station surveillance tied events together, and prosecutors argued gang affiliation was a motivating factor. A jury found Elijah Loren Arthur, Sr. guilty of first-degree murder and using a firearm in a crime of violence, and Joey Michael Thomas pleaded guilty to second-degree murder after supplying the weapon. Officer Cabrera, a seven-year department veteran, was survived by his parents, brother and girlfriend.
Did anyone in the area witness the traffic stop or the suspects fleeing that night?
