I’ve been following Darold Kishayinew's case for some time, and I can’t help but wonder about the role of traditional media in keeping such cases in the public eye. Back in 1997, the coverage of missing persons, especially those from Indigenous communities, wasn’t as robust as it is today. I’ve only been able to find a handful of articles on Darold from the initial months after he went missing. It makes me think about how media exposure could have influenced the investigation or motivated a witness to come forward.
Given the increased spotlight on missing Indigenous persons today, it makes me think about the “what ifs.” What if there had been more media pressure back then? Would Darold's case have had more leads? I genuinely hope that the increased awareness for cases like his in recent years can create some momentum for new information to come out. Anyone else have thoughts on the media’s role in these cases?
