David Kyak was 19 when he was last seen on July 31, 1972, in the community then called Frobisher Bay (now Iqaluit), Nunavut. He was described as thin with short hair and was reported by his roommate as last seen that day; a friend later said they spoke with him on August 12, 1972, though that is not a confirmed sighting.
In the months before he disappeared David had moved between communities and medical care. He attended a training program at Camp Borden in Ontario and was admitted to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie. He returned briefly to Pond Inlet in May 1972 and went to Frobisher Bay at a nurse’s request to see a doctor. He was receiving weekly outpatient treatment for mild paranoia and had a psychiatrist appointment scheduled that summer. At the time he was last seen he was reported to be wearing a blue nylon ski jacket, faded blue jeans, and a blue canvas ball cap with a polar bear crest.
Many questions remain about what happened to David and about the gap between the July 31 sighting and the unconfirmed August 12 report. If anyone knew David, saw him in Frobisher Bay in 1972, or has information about his whereabouts, please share what is known.
