Patrick L. Hayes, 61, was shot and killed after a road rage confrontation near Kimball Junction on the night of September 25, 2024. A former NCAA All-American swimmer and local coach, Hayes was described as a towering 6 feet 5 inches man who walked his dog Tilly and was well known in his Hideout, Utah, neighborhood.
Surveillance footage showed Hayes pull over at the Ross Creek entrance to Jordanelle State Park around 11 p.m., exit his vehicle and approach a Jeep Gladiator that had been following him. The sheriff’s office reported Hayes was holding a metal baton and a pocket knife when the Jeep’s driver fired a single .45-caliber shot that struck him in the chest. The shooter fled and Hayes’s body was found the next morning by a passerby.
Investigators subsequently identified 62-year-old Greg Kyle DeBoer and, during a November search of his home, say he admitted to shooting Hayes and showed where he had buried a .45-caliber Kimber 1911 wrapped and hidden near his property. Ballistics testing reportedly linked rare Winchester Black Talon ammunition to the round recovered from Hayes. DeBoer was later arrested on an obstruction charge for concealing the firearm; prosecutors said they could not disprove his claim of self-defense beyond a reasonable doubt.
Does anyone have information about the events that night or Hayes’s final movements before he pulled over at Ross Creek?
