Amber Lynn McFarland, 24, vanished from Portage la Prairie, Manitoba in the early hours of October 18, 2008. She had spent the evening of October 17 at local lounges and was last seen leaving the Cat and Fiddle Nite Club after 1 a.m., wearing a black short-sleeved turtleneck sweater, blue jeans, silver metallic flats and carrying a black and white checkered or plaid purse. Her car was later found in the Canad Inns parking lot, where she had left it earlier that evening.
Security footage from a beer vendor at the Midtown Motor Inn shows Amber purchasing beer with two men, identified as her ex-boyfriend and another acquaintance, and leaving with them. A no-contact order was reportedly in place against the ex-boyfriend at the time. Her father reported her missing the same day; Amber did not use her phone or bank accounts after she disappeared. Nearly 1,500 volunteers took part in massive searches, and in June 2009 the RCMP announced the case was being investigated as a homicide. Two men, including the ex-boyfriend from the surveillance video, were arrested and later released without charges.
Amber’s disappearance remains an open investigation and her family continues to seek answers. If anyone knew Amber, saw her the night of October 17–18, 2008, or has information about her whereabouts, please come forward.
