John Derek Old Shoes was 34 when he disappeared from the Blood Reserve Timber limits area in southern Alberta on April 1, 2001. He had been camping in country between Waterton Lakes National Park and the Chief Mountain Border Crossing and was last seen there that day.
An Indigenous man about six feet tall and 170 pounds, he had a dark complexion, black hair and brown eyes. Distinctive tattoos included an eagle on his chest, the word DOG on his left arm, and an eagle with an Indian design on his right arm; he also had scars on his forehead and both forearms. The Blood Tribe Police Service has investigated the case.
Few public details explain what happened after he disappeared, and his family continues to seek answers. If anyone knew John, his travel plans that spring, or saw him in the Blood Reserve Timber limits around April 1, 2001, please come forward with information.
