Hi everyone, I've been doing a deep dive into the Richard Henry Opato case, and something that caught my attention is the intersection of the customs practices and the timeframe of Richard's disappearance. Given that he vanished near an international border, I wonder if there could have been any unusual activity or reports of someone matching his description trying to cross into the U.S. or heading further away.
Also, does anyone know how prominently they checked border crossings back in 1998? Was there any follow-up at border posts or with customs? It just seems like such a crucial aspect given where he disappeared. With the proximity to Niagara Falls, it’s entirely possible that someone trying to disappear might use the border as an escape route.
Thinking it might be worth seeing if any retired officers or customs agents from that time would have any anecdotes or leads related to border activity. Anyone else considered this angle or noticed connections with other cases in border areas in Ontario/New York?
