Timothy Papik and his daughter Diane left Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, by canoe on the morning of August 6, 1979, bound for Whale Cove and were never seen again. Timothy was born in 1940 and was described as a 39-year-old Inuk man with black hair, brown eyes and tattoos on both forearms: a knife, snake and flower on his left and a naked woman on his right. The canoe was also missing after they failed to arrive, and no witnesses or physical evidence of their fate have been reported.
The entry notes the Arctic’s unpredictable waters and the long, rugged coastline that created an immense search area, but offers no confirmed explanation for what happened during the voyage. Their disappearance remains unresolved and the circumstances of their journey’s end are unknown.
If anyone has memories of Timothy or Diane, or information about travel between Rankin Inlet and Whale Cove in August 1979, please share what is known.
