Willie Ray, an Indigenous man born in 1933, was last seen in northern Ontario’s remote bush near Sandy Lake and Favourable Lake in September 1960. He lived with his father and made his living hunting, fishing and trapping; on a morning in September he left the family camp to go hunting carrying his 12-gauge shotgun and did not return.
All of the Ray family’s boats were later found at the residence, which led investigators away from a boating accident and toward a land disappearance. Initial searches and later efforts produced no clues to his whereabouts. Willie was described as having black hair and brown eyes and being highly capable in the bush. Few concrete leads have ever emerged about what happened after he left camp.
If anyone knew Willie, his movements, or the area around Sandy Lake and Favourable Lake in 1960, can you help fill in the gaps?
