On April 10, 1976, four-year-old Stella Mary Rich went missing after the snowmobile she was riding on broke through ice on the frozen harbor at North West River, Newfoundland and Labrador. She was a passenger with two adults when the machine hit a soft patch about 3:00 am; Stella Mary was thrown from the snowmobile and swept away beneath the ice. At the time she was last seen she wore a green jacket and green pants.
Searches in the immediate aftermath were hampered by the remote location, severe winter conditions and strong currents beneath the ice. Her body has never been recovered and she is presumed to have drowned. The case remains an open, long-term missing person matter for the community and family.
Did anyone in North West River at the time or with knowledge of winter travel routes remember that night or the snowmobile involved?
