On the evening of July 22, 2024, a confrontation on the Meriden Green in Connecticut left 28-year-old Beth Ndwiga dead. Witnesses say the dispute began between Ndwiga and another woman, later identified as 32-year-old Myriah Farrar, with each woman accompanied by a man. Farrar reportedly attacked Ndwiga while Ndwiga did not appear to fight back; a man with Ndwiga tried to intervene but was warned off by the man with Farrar, who displayed a firearm.
During the struggle Ndwiga is believed to have stabbed Farrar in the shoulder. Ndwiga then ran across the Green pursued by Farrar and the armed man. The man shot Ndwiga, and after she fell he walked over and fired additional shots; first responders found her with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and neck and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police arrested Farrar the next day and charged her with second-degree assault and conspiracy to commit second-degree assault. Investigators later identified 42-year-old Trevor Smith as the man accused of firing the fatal shots; he was arrested and charged with murder and weapons offenses. Family and friends recalled Ndwiga as a West Woods Christian Academy graduate who had a medical assistant certificate and enjoyed helping others.
