I've been following the case of Bernard Wierzba, and it's tough not to think about how quickly a fun day can turn into a tragic one. What's been on my mind is the decision to cross the river. Why did they feel confident in doing so without any life jackets? This isn't to pass judgment—it’s just such an important reminder for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors. Rivers can be so deceiving; they might look calm and shallow, especially in late September when the weather can still trick you into thinking summer's still lingering. It makes you wonder about any previous experiences they might have had with that river. Maybe they thought they knew it well enough, which teaches us how familiarity can sometimes be misleading. Also, it must have been so hard for their third friend to go back without them, knowing the rescue teams were doing all they could but with no guarantees of a positive outcome. I hope others take this as a wake-up call to always be prepared, no matter the circumstances. Sending strength to everyone who knew Bernard and Lloyd.
