On the late evening of May 4, 2023, Phillip Jamaal Harris-Evans, a 42-year-old Black man from New Britain, was shot at the Gulf station at 120 Main Street in the Terryville section of Plymouth, Connecticut. Multiple 911 calls came in around 10:30 p.m.; officers found Harris-Evans unresponsive with life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was taken to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead.
Police took 40-year-old Charles Whitfield Jr., a Terryville resident, into custody at the scene. Investigators say Whitfield and Harris-Evans were known to each other and described the shooting as an isolated incident. Officers processed the scene where one car was left running and another still had a gas pump in it; a neighbor reported hearing an argument followed by gunshots and seeing a man backing away with a handgun. Whitfield was arrested without resistance, charged with murder, held on $2 million bond, and arraigned in court. The motive has not been publicly detailed.
If anyone has information about what led to this deadly encounter at the gas station, please share it with the authorities.
